KSL 5.2 Forced To Drop NBC-US, Will Carry LiveWell Network

For those of you that have not heard, NBC-Universal Sports is becoming a pay TV network, and it's being pulled from all affiliate stations on January 1, 2012. You expected this sort of shenanigans when Comcast merged with NBC/Universal, didn't you? So, one of the few broadcast TV sports networks is becoming Comcast's answer to the ESPN juggernaut. Lots of luck with that, Comcast. NBC-US's lineup is no competition for ESPN, who pretty much "own" most major league sports. If you're a sports fan and a "cable cutter" your choices are limited. There's America One (A1), showing some international and less popular sports (A1 is seen locally on KUTA-LD channel 8.1) and... well, that's it. Whatever is left of professional sports free OTA is on the "Big 4" - ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox, showing whatever ESPN and Comcast don't own the rights to. Not being a big sports fan I, for one, will not miss NBC-US on 5.2 - except I did enjoy having an extra channel of coverage during the Olympics when NBC has Olympics broadcast rights.

So KSL 5.2 digital will now become a LiveWell Network affiliate.

While it may be lacking some of the features of it's bigger brothers, most notably an expansion port for playing movies, it can still access the exact same online content that all the other models can, albeit only in 720p (see chart below to compare all ROKU models). Lack of full 1080p/i on the less expensive Roku models is really a non-issue for most people because there isn't much streaming content in 1080i/p, and many people don't even have an internet connection that can handle 1080p content reliably.

Again, like the top of the line Roku XS on sale at Amazon for $89.99 ($10 off), I don't know how long this sale on the Roku LT will last. Even at full retail, any Roku is a bargain.

What's happening at Cache Free TV?

I just wanted to post a quick note about what I'm up to.

First, I am suspending antenna installations until the weather improves and roofs are clear in the spring. There are a few people whom I've already spoken to, and I will attempt to get them set up ASAP.

Second, I am working on a batch of antennas to fill current orders, and I should have a few "extras" available after New Years.

Third, I am planning to do a complete review of EVERY channel I get - I'll rate each channel according to usefulness and quality of content, usage of bandwidth for HDTV and subchannels, and quality of picture. I believe I will start that project after the New Year as well.
