Cox and CBS Las Vegas affiliate
KLAS-TV can't reach a contract agreement. Screens went blank on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, showing only this message: "This station is demanding a
significant fee increase for this channel and has pulled it from Cox
viewers." Talks between Cox and
Nexstar are stalled. Caught in the middle are the
cable company's Las Vegas customers.

This threatens about 350,000 customers ability to view CBS programming - including the upcoming Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, Feb 7th. You realize, of course, that eventually the two parties will reach an agreement, and programming will be restored. But if you're a Cox customer right now, that's little consolation!

But you can watch CBS and KLAS-TV content for free, and without switching providers!

Here are two easy ways to watch CBS programming, including the Super Bowl, FREE.

Get an antenna. KLAS channel 8 broadcasts their HD signal on RF channel 7 VHF. The signal is full HD, and the transmitter is located on the East side of the city. This makes a simple pair of rabbit ears a viable option. Try a pair like this RCA ANT111. If you can't get this set, then get one that is similar. And avoid any antenna that is amplified! This will only introduce noise and possibly overload your TV tuner. You'll need to place it in a good location for good reception. I suggest an East-facing window.

Once you set up your antenna, you'll need to go to your TV sets menu and change sources from "Cable" to "Antenna", then scan for channels.

If you own your own home, you might consider a permanent, outdoor antenna like this UHF VHF FM OUTDOOR DTV ANTENNA- and the next time Cox and a local station have a dispute, you'll be prepared!

You could get an antenna locally, but given the large number of people seeking an antenna to watch the "big game", chances are they'll be pretty hard to find. But if you go to Amazon and sign up for a Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial , you can have your antenna delivered in two days.

Use the internet. This will require a computer with a bit of software called "PLEX", a home network, and a Roku or other supported device. The trick involves a service called USTV now.

Dish TV has launched their new OTT (internet) TV service called Sling TV.
Sling TV is a new live TV service that allows subscribers to watch several cable TV channels on their TVs, computers or mobile
devices. These are live TV channels, just like cable, except they're delivered over the Internet. Sling TV
is a subsidiary of Dish Network, the satellite provider, it's operated
as an entirely separate service. You don't need a Dish subscription to
get Sling TV.

Sling offers a selection of channels from AMC Networks, Disney, Scripps, Time Warner, and Univision, most notably ESPN and ESPN2. Three add-on packs are available for $5 each: "Kids Extra" adds Baby TV, Boomerang, Disney XD, and Ducktv, "News & Info Extra" adds Bloomberg Television, Cooking Channel, DIY Network, and HLN, and "Sports Extra" adds BeIN Sports, ESPNews, ESPNU, ESPN Goal Line, SEC Network, Universal Sports, and Univision Deportes Network. Sling TV also features video on demand content, including catch-up programming from its channels, and original content from Maker Studios.

Note that Sling TV does not provide your local network channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, FOX, CW, ION, etc) but it appears to be an ideal option for those that currently use an antenna for watching their local cable channels, or if you use Hulu to access content.

I have just signed up for the free trial and added the channel to my Roku players. I will report back with my review after my trial period is over. Well, it has come to pass - I am no longer a resident of Cache Valley, or Utah. I've moved back to Las Vegas. That means I can't install your antenna, or sell you an antenna in Northern Utah.
They say that all good things must pass... And so it is for my time in Utah. As of mid - August 2014, I will be moving out of state. I will still maintain this blog, but updates will be few and far between. I can still answer your questions and make recommendations for you. But if you want to buy an antenna or have one installed, time is ticking. I have a limited number of antennas here that I can install or sell, and when they are gone, they're gone. Now's your last chance to save hundreds to thousands of dollars by firing your TV provider and having Cache Free TV install an antenna for free HD TV for life!

By my estimation, I've saved readers and customers thousands of dollars already, and they will continue to save money long after I'm gone. So tell me...
I lost CW30.1 and ZUUS Country 30.2 a few times this past week. Sometimes when I re-scanned I found a 30.3 sub-channel - with nothing on it. Or nothing on 30.2, and ZUUS on 30.2. But on Saturday May 3 when it happened again - I re-scanned, I found ZUUS Country had been moved to 30.3, and 30.2 is now the MOVIES! network.

Movies! (stylized as "MOVIES!") is an American digital multicast television network that is owned as a joint venture between Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting and the Fox Television Stations subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. The network features an emphasis in its programming on feature films; it is available in the United States through the digital subchannels of broadcast television stations, as well as on select cable providers. Movies! is broadcast 24 hours a day in the widescreen picture format (available in either in standard-definition or high definition depending on the station's preference). The network competes with This TV, a similarly formatted network originally operated by Weigel (whose operational stake in that network was later taken over by Tribune Broadcasting on November 1, 2013); that network's primary source of programming is composed of feature films, though that network also broadcasts classic television series and children's programming.

Presenting "a variety of theatrical motion pictures in a
new, viewer and advertiser friendly format, not seen on broadcast
television to date", films featured on the network are edited for graphic profanity and inappropriate violent or sexual content, but are not edited for running times to fit in a time block (movie start and end times vary depending on the length of each movie). As a result of the network running films in their original running time with commercials added, feature films that air on Movies! are scheduled in a manner that mirrors the program scheduling of premium cable channels. Some of the films aired on the channel are 20th Century Fox releases, however titles from other studios, such as Paramount Pictures, are also shown. Movies! also airs a three-hour block of programs aimed at children each Saturday morning.

Ever since KMYU 2.2 became a MyTV affiliate and pretty much dropped all ThisTV programming, there has been no channel in Utah dedicated to movies. ThisTV used to be my go-to channel for movies when there was nothing else on, and I was sorry to see the network kicked to the curb by KMYU. ThisTV wasn't exactly dropped by KMYU, it was worse than that. KMYU kept their affiliation with ThisTV, but pretty much stopped showing ThisTV programming - in effect, holding ThisTV hostage, ensuring that the network wouldn't move to another channel and become a competitor.

Although the network is available to affiliates in HD or SD, Movies! is seen locally on CW30.2 in SD and wide screen, although some content is in 4:3 format. I have had intermittent EPG (Electronic Program Guide) data for both 30.2 and 30.3 since the subchannel was added, but I am hoping that the engineers will work this out. In the meantime, you can go see the schedule here - http://moviestvnetwork.com/schedule.php or add the network to your channel lineup at TitanTV.com.

This brings to 44 the number of unique channels I receive at my location using an Antennas Direct DB8e UHF Antenna and a simple dipole antenna for VHF channel KUTA-8. While I can't promise you the same results, you can get Movies! and at least 20 other channels with a simple antenna in most locations in Cache Valley. When I started this blog in 2011, I had just dumped DirecTV and put up an antenna. DirecTV was costing me about $70 a month. In my first post on the subject, I noted that this was pretty much average for Pay TV customers. I also calculated that this $70 a month added up to about $9000 over 10 years, and would only continue to rise over time.

So now just a few short years later in 2014 the average cost of pay TV is up to about $85 a month - over $1000 a year, over $10,000 over ten years. In fact, the average price of cable has been increasing at a rate of 6% annually. What is the cable company going to get from you over your lifetime? Let's assume that you start paying cable at age 20 for $85 a month and continue to pay until you are 70, a period of 50 years. If you were able to work out some magical deal with your provider to have no price increase for 50 years, you would spend $51,000 on TV during that time. Add taxes, Set Top Box rentals, and a 6% annual price increase, and your lifetime total for TV alone will approach $100,000.

When I put up that first TV antenna, I got about 22 channels using a converter box on my old 32" analog TV. The picture was just as good as what I was paying DirecTV $70 a month for. With the money we were saving, within a year we were able to buy a 52" HDTV within a year - and that gave us an AWESOME picture! More channels and subchannels went on air, and I improved my antenna setup so that now I get about 40 channels free. Also in the time since I cut the cord, we've added 2 Roku boxes and both Plex and PlayOn servers that allow me to watch almost anything on the internet, and a FTA satellite dish. I have a DVR that lets me record either FTA satellite or broadcast TV. We pay nothing for TV but our $7.99 a month Netflix subscription, and we rent a few new releases on Redbox a month. And I have access to over a thousand channels.Yea, I only watch a handful of those channels. But I don't pay for any of them. How many channels do you pay for that you never watch?

No, I'm not missing a thing. Sure, there are some things I may have to wait to see. I can watch my TV shows on Hulu for free, and all I have to do is wait a day or two.

So, my question to you is this:

Why are you still paying for TV?

I received the following email from Amazon this morning alerting me that
the price of Amazon Prime was increasing from $79 to $99 a year:

Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime
has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items
eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million

From the website- If your membership renews before April 17, 2014,
you'll be charged at a membership rate of $79. If your membership
renews on or after April 17, 2014, you'll be charged at a membership
rate of $99.

While I've enjoyed Amazon Prime for the past 2 years, I have to make a
choice between Netflix at $94 a year and Amazon Prime benefits at $99
(Free prime videos, Prime 2 day shipping, Kindle lending library). I
think Netflix is a better value for my family, given that Netflix has a
bigger library (including Disney), I can still get free shipping from
Amazon if I order $35 at once, and I can get plenty of content for my
Kindle for free on Amazon and the internet. I also have a Sam's club
membership so I can get good deals there. I went to Amazon and selected "Remind Me Later - Remind me three days before my membership renews".

Sorry, Amazon. I'm out as of August, 2014.

If you're an Amazon Prime member, is it worth $99 a year to keep your Prime membership? After setting up a FTA satellite system, I set a challenge for myself: Just how cheaply could I set up a FTA system for Galaxy 19? Turns out the number is around $30. Of course, the secret is getting a suitable dish for free.

The dish I used was a discarded DirecTV "Slimline" dish, it's about 22" x
36". (I wouldn't try anything smaller!) You can find them on
Freecycle.org, Craigs List, ebay, on your neighbor's roof, or at the

You'll end up with hundreds of channels, all free!

I should point out for those who are not familiar, FTA (Free To Air) satellite is NOT a replacement for paid satellite TV. And while you will get hundreds of channels on satellite Galaxy 19, most of them are religious, foreign language, or religious AND foreign language! Also note that most channels on G-19 are not HD, and the 2 suggested receivers are also not HD. But for about $30 and a few hours of your time, you can get some useful channels like EBRU tv and RT news, for free. Forever. You don't even need to pay for internet access!
Okay, I'll admit it. I am a nerd - and I was a nerd long before being a nerd was cool. I got beat up for being nerdy. I was born at the dawn of the space age. I watched Neil Armstrong land on the moon. I subscribed to Sky and Telescope. I built my own telescopes.

And I watched Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" on PBS.

On March 9 2014, Fox and Nat Geo networks will premiere “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” a follow-up to
Carl Sagan’s 13-part series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage”.
The original
PBS series premiered in 1980 and explored our universe. Seth MacFarlane,
the creator of “Family Guy” and “The Cleveland Show,” is teaming with
Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan to executive produce the new 13-part series
that continues to probe the stars this time narrated by the world’s most
famous astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson.

In an unprecedented move, Fox will air the premiere episode
simultaneously on Sunday, March 9, 9-10 p.m. in the U.S. across ten
21st Century Fox networks. It was also announced that “Cosmos” will
premiere on all 90 National Geographic Channels in 180 countries, as
well as 120 Fox-branded channels in 125 countries, making this the
largest global launch ever for a television series. The remainder of the
series will air on Fox with Nat Geo rebroadcasting the episodes the
next day.
Just a quick list of where to find Olympics coverage:

First, on broadcast TV, you can find events on your local NBC channel - in Utah, KSL 5.1 - but it's all delayed broadcasts. You may also find events on other NBC owned pay TV channels such as
NBC-Universal.

NBC has locked down their internet streams and made them
available only to pay TV customers - http://stream.nbcolympics.com/live-extra/ (thank you, Comcast!) You will need your Pay TV provider's
credentials to log in - or your Uncle Ed's pay TV credentials . Other possible online sources include foreign sources such as Russia
Today (RT), BBC, or other international sources. Some sources may be
geo-blocked, however. Two other sources for coverage online are http://www.superusvoxtv.com/ and http://www.ilive.to

If you have access to Ku or C-band satellite, NBC may have feeds on AMC 1, AMC 6,
and / or AMC 9 (Ku) and you may find some unencrypted feeds on Galaxy 14, 16, or
17 on "C" band. SatelliteGuys.US_TheList - nbc
There also are reports of Olympics on Ku band satellites Satmex 8
116.8 (3719 H, 26999) and Satmex 6 (3833 H, 3620) - in Spanish.

I returned from my Christmas / New Years vacation to find that KSL has dumped the simply dreadful LWN (Live Well Network) from its 5.2 subchannel and replaced it with COZI TV (http://www.cozitv.com/). I realized that there are a few people (maybe 2 or 3) who will miss LWN, but all of their content is available online at their website (http://livewellnetwork.com) as well as on ROKU with the Nowhere Man private channel.
Okay, so this is not one of the networks I had hoped for but ANYTHING is better than LWN. Seriously, we already have enough retro- and classic- TV channels! I really wanted to see one of the movie networks come to Utah, like Movies! or This TV. KUTV Digital channel 2.2 is a This TV affiliate, but not really. KUTV 2.2 is also a MyTV affiliate, and also serves as a place for KUTV to broadcast more sports. KUTV shows almost NO This TV programming. I believe the only reason 2.2 continues to be a This TV affiliate is to keep other stations from becoming a This affiliate. And that's just wrong...

Installation of a single satellite FTA system is a relatively easy task, provided that you done a little homework and have the right tools for the job. The tools needed are a magnetic level, compass, satellite finder, open end and socket wrenches, screwdrivers, and of course your FTA receiver, dish and mount, and coaxial cables.

Your first task once you decide what satellite you want is to determine the location for your dish. For most installations this will be on a roof. If you are installing on a roof, most dishes will come with a "J-pipe" mount that includes all the mounting hardware you need, but I would also recommend using some asphalt sealant between the roofing material and J-pipe to prevent water intrusion. You can also install your dish on a pipe set into concrete. A pole set in concrete should be a heavy weight metal water pipe, not the galvanized "top rail" for chain link fencing that I often recommend for mounting OTA antennas.

Now you'll need to determine where your dish will be pointed, and for our example, we'll use satellite Galaxy 19. For your installation you'll need to determine if trees or buildings are in the way, and ajust the location of your dish installation accordingly. To do this we'll use dishpointer.com.

Simply choose the satellite you want, and enter your address. You can zoom in and move the pin to the exact location where you want to install on your property. Write down the dish elevation, azumith, and skew that results. To determine if your dish will be blocked by trees or structures, go to Dish alignment with Dishpointer.

Once you've determined an install location with a clear view, it's time to mount the dish. Assemble the dish and mount according to the instructions that came with it. If installing on a roof, mount the J pipe solidly on the roof using a level and the hardware provided. If you're setting a post in the ground, make sure you dig down at least 2 feet, and below frost level if you live in an area where the ground freezes, and let the concrete set for a week before mounting your dish on the post. Whatever way you choose to mount it, it is essential that your use a level to get the post perfectly vertical, otherwise pointing the dish becomes difficult for a single dish satellite, and if you want to add a motor drive later it will be impossible to align correctly.

Azimuth and Elevation

Next you'll want to pre-set the "altitude" to the elevation you got from dishpointer, and mount the dish on your vertical post. Set your altitude as accurately as possible.

Altitude adjustment

Next, determine TRUE north with your compass, and point your dish in the direction you found for "Azimuth". Remember, 0 degrees is North, 90 is East, 180 is South, and 370 is west. Do not tighten the bolts completely, you'll need to be able move your dish to find signal. Mount your LNB and roughly adjust the skew.

Skew adjustment - facing dish

Now you'll need to connect your receiver to a TV, and run coax from the receiver to your LNB. You will then use a short piece of coax to insert your signal meter into the line, so you can see the meter while you adjust the dish. Power on your reciever, and make sure the power to your LNB is on. (see your owners manual, it's in the setup menu). You can also set your LNB frequency now, for me it's 10750.

Once you're set up and powered on, your signal meter should light. If you're pointed to close to the correct location, you will hear a tone from the meter. if not, move your dish slowly a few degrees east or west and back. When the meter peaks tighten the azimuth bolt slightly, and slowly move your dish up and down until your meter peaks, and lock down the altitude bolt loosely. Repeat this process until your meter peaks, then fine tune your skew angle on your LNB. You now have locked in a satellite. Hopefully, it's the one you wanted! But if it's not, that's okay - once you discover what satellite it is, you can figure out how far off you are and start again.

While your receiver may have a list of satellites pre-installed, I'm going to suggest that you start by adding a satellite. Following the directions in your owners manual, add a satellite (choose "Ku band), and then do what is called a "Blind Scan". This is like when you scan to find channels OTA with an antenna. It may take a while, but eventually on Galaxy 19, you'll have a list of over 200 TV channels, and about 50 audio channels. Compare what you see on your TV with the channels listed on FTA list http://www.ftalist.com/satellites.php for your desired satellite. Does what you see on the TV look like what you see on FTA List? If it does, then you're on the right satellite. Congratulations! Now clean up, grab your owners manual and familiarize yourself with your new system. I would first go through your channels and add the ones you like to your "favorites". If you have the wrong satellite, figure out which one you DO have, and use that information to re-aim our dish and do another blind scan.
If you are having any problems or have questions, there are a lot of resources on the internet. In fact, before you decide if you want to attempt this, visit some of these sites and forums. Read and learn, and ask questions - don't go into this blindly. But it's really easier than you think. I procrastinated for months, but once the post was in the ground, I was watching TV in under an hour.
UPDATE: AEREO IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE, FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY AFTER SUPREME COURT RULING.

Aereo has now opened the doors to its "over the top" video service to all Utah residents. It is offering a free month of service to new customers through this link: http://aereo.com/i/bq211F

For those that don't know about AEREO, it is a service that uses individual antennas and tuners assigned to each subscriber to deliver local OTA broadcast TV channels over the internet. It also provides a program guide (1 week into the future) as well as a cloud-based DVR service that allows you to store 20 or 60 hours of content, depending on your plan. The cost is $8 a month for the 20 hour plan, and $12 for the 60 hour plan that allows watching or recording 2 programs at once.

From Wikipedia:

Aereo is a technology company based in New York City that allows
subscribers to view live as well as time-shifted streams of over-the-air
television on Internet-connected devices. Immediately following
Aereo's launch in New York City the company was sued by a consortium of
major broadcasters, including CBS, Comcast's NBC, Disney's ABC and
Newscorp's Fox for copyright infringement. On April 1, 2013, a federal
appeals court upheld a lower court's ruling, finding that Aereo’s
streams to subscribers were not "public performances", and thus did not
constitute copyright infringement.

Aereo's technology allows
subscribers to view live broadcast content and to record it for later
viewing. As of October 2012, Aereo can be used on Windows, Mac, and
Linux PCs with a compatible browser or iOS devices including the
iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Apple TV (2nd & 3rd Gen) via AirPlay. A
Roku video player can be used also. Monthly plans start at $8 for 20
hours of DVR storage. Aereo
provides this service by leasing to each user an individual remote
antenna. This distinguishes Aereo from purely internet-based streaming
services

I've had AEREO for just 3 days now, and while I'm not an expert on AEREO by any means, here's my first impression.

Here in Utah, the channel lineup is as follows:

2.1 KUTV
2.2 KMYU
4.1 KTVX
4.2 MeTV
5.1 KSL
5.2 Live Well
5.3 Local Weather (They have it listed it as NBC Plus)
7.1 KUED
7.2 World
7.3 V/me
9.1 KUEN
9.2 MHz
11.1 KBYU
11.2 BYU TV
11.3 BYU International (They have it listed as Create)
13.1 KSTU
13.2 Antenna TV
14.1 KJZZ
16.1 ION
16.2 Qubo
16.3 ION Life
16.4 Infomercials
20.1 KTMW
20.2 BIZ TV
20.3 Infomercials
20.4 RED ADVenir
24.1 Estrella TV
30.1 KUCW
30.2 TCN Country

Bloomberg TV is also included. Other channels may be added in the future, but at this time the service is lacking a few local Salt Lake channels. These are mostly LP and Spanish language channels. While other AEREO cities such as New York restrict service to the metro area served, I believe Utah's extensive translator network that brings OTA TV to most residents of the state allows AEREO to provide their service to all of Utah.

What is there to like about AEREO?
The DVR is one of the things I like about AEREO, along with a program
guide that goes out a week. There aren't many OTA PVRs out there, and
none of them are really good save a media computer with tuners, and
that's just a pain for most people. My $50 HomeWorx PVR does the job,
but it's still not a "perfect" solution. It also has the ION channels (Ion, Qubo, and Ion Life) that aren't available in Cache valley. Video is either 480i or 720p, and for the most part it is good quality with minimal buffering and the video is smooth enough for fast action such as sports.

What don't I like about AEREO?
On the basic plan, I can only watch or record one show at a time, so I
can't watch one show while recording another, or watch 2 different shows
on 2 devices at once. If you want to watch one program while recording another, you need to pay for the $12/ month plan. Also, it is one show at a
time - for example, if I start watching the local news at 5pm, at the
end of the 5pm news AEREO goes back to the channel guide. I would prefer
it to be a continuous stream, and automatically continue on that
channel as it goes to the national news. I can understand how that could
lead to someone accidentally leaving it on and blowing their bandwidth
cap for the month, but it's really a pain to have to scroll back through the guide to
the channel you were watching and start again. I was kind of hoping I
could put on Qubo for the kids and have them watch for an hour or so
uninterrupted. Instead, I have to start the next show myself. While my 2
year old has mastered Netflix and PBS Kids on the Roku, the interface
for AEREO is a little bit much for him.

Who is a good candidate for AEREO service?
While the channels AEREO offers (Except for Bloomberg) are available in most areas of the state free with an antenna, some people just can't get these channels due to being in an apartment, or due to their remote location or mountainous terrain in the state that blocks signals. In these areas, the only other options are paid TV or FTA satellite. Pay TV will cost you a minimum of $30 a month plus taxes and fees - lets call it $40 a month. And none of these other paid services (Comcast, Dish, DirecTV) offers a DVR with these low price packages. So, if you are on a limited budget and live in an area where you can get internet but no reliable OTA TV, then AEREO may be just what you need.

Who shouldn't bother with AEREO?
If you already have an antenna and are happy with it, don't bother. If you want the DVR functionality, I suggest the HomeWorx HW-150PVR and a USB HDD. If you have a pay TV service that has channels you want that aren't in the AEREO lineup, you'll probably be better off keeping that service. As for me, I am sticking with my antenna and PVR, along with my Roku and FTA satellite system.

Legalities?
While AEREO has been deemed legal for now, lawsuits are ongoing. Courts have decided that AEREO may continue while these lawsuits continue. The way I see it, AEREO has a strong case to continue operating. (IANAL). But the Pay TV industry and networks have deep pockets, and there is nothing stopping them from buying a few congresscritters - in addition to the ones they already own - and getting the law changed. Until then, it's all good.

So give AEREO a try - it won't cost anything for a one month free trial: AEREO free trial offerCheap Snivelerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00105564779025776150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3277454530205666538.post-79502321985361989972013-08-08T09:41:00.000-06:002013-08-08T09:42:06.193-06:00A Plea To TV Stations For Proper PSIP/EPG Data

I know some TV stations and networks monitor this blog, so I'm hoping that someone that can do something about it will read it and act on it. (I know, I'm a dreamer, right?)

For some time now, many TV stations have had inaccurate, incomplete, or
missing PSIP (Program and System Information Protocol) data. For me, this has been an inconvenience mostly, until
now. I have an OTA PVR (HomeWorx HW-150PVR, for under $50) that is
dependent on PSIP data for recording. I know some of the blame for
inattention to PSIP goes to TV manufacturers (For example, my
top-of-the-line in 2008 52" Philips TV only tells me what is on now, and
only on the channel I am watching now!), but broadcasters should be
doing what they can to keep their PSIP data accurate. Manufacturers are
only following the specs for our ATSC standards, which stations are
supposed to follow - but rarely do.

I realize that most channels with bad PSIP data are independent and/or
LP stations, and I thank the "Big Guys" for doing at least a passable
job with their PSIP data. But all stations should consider that PSIP
data is invaluable to many of their viewers and also encourages viewers
to plan their viewing so they can watch YOUR channel and YOUR
commercials rather than another channel that has PSIP data. Also it
allows those of us with PVRs to record YOUR programs and commercials
rather than watch another station's programs and commercials.

Here is what I consider to be important PSIP data:

ACCURATE
time/date info: Without accurate time and date info, many PVRs are
completely unable to record your channel, period. Most PVRs have no
internal clock, getting their clock data instead from whatever channel
they are tuned to. Would it be too difficult for a station engineer to
check and correct the time and date once a week?

Station ID and virtual channels:
Every channel should have a UNIQUE ID for every subchannel. For
example, my local CW affiliate KUCW 30.1 and 30.2 are both identified as "KUCW-DT". Also, unless
your virtual channel is the same as your RF channel, your channel will
not be correctly identified.

EPG (Electronic Program Guide) data: Okay, here's where a
lot of stations drop the ball. I know that EPG data can be populated
well into the future, even a week out. However I'm lucky if I can get
EPG data 5 hours into the future on those stations that even have any
EPG data. Here's what is important to viewers as far as EPG data:
Accurate listings of programs and start/end times, at least 24 hours
out. It is impossible to record a program that starts tomorrow, 24 hours
from now, if your EPG data only goes out 5 hours. Even people without
PVRs cannot plan tomorrow night's viewing if they have no EPG data. So,
if you can't go out a week in your EPG, at least go out 24 hours+.

We really don't need all the extended EPG data ("On tonight's episode,
Mary Lou..."). Yea, it's nice, but not essential. PBS stations in
general make good use of their PSIP, followed closely by the major
network affiliates. Independent and LP stations are lucky to get their
own call signs correct. Ironically, LP and independents benefit most
from a good EPG, since their listings are often not found on sources
like TitanTV, and many OTA viewers (mostly older viewers) don't have
access to TV listings on the internet.

Since the demise of TVGOS (TV Guide On Screen) and the weekly TV book
that used to accompany most Sunday newspapers, along with the slowly growing number of OTA PVRs, PSIP/EPG information is
becoming more important than ever.
In the third installment of our Free To Air (FTA) satellite series, we'll cover the equipment needed to set up a simple, one satellite system that will get you started. We'll assume that you are going to set up your system for Galaxy 19 at 97 degrees. While there is lots of programming on other satellites, Galaxy 19 has over 200 unencrypted channels available (although most are foreign language and/or religious) and it is the logical place to start.

While you can add a motor drive or use multiple LNBs to get more than one satellite, at this point we'll be focused on just a single satellite. For this, you need just 4 things: A dish, 30" or larger with mount, an "LNB" (a Low-Noise Block down converter), a receiver, and some coax cable. I would also suggest an inexpensive satellite finder to make setup much easier.

Here's the low-down on all that you need:

Our first item to consider is the dish itself.

Let me get this out of the way: No, you can't simply use your old DirecTV or Dish Network dish. These dishes are just too small and use a different type of LNB. Although some hobbyists have adapted the larger sizes of these dishes for FTA (notably the DirecTV "Slimline" dish), they just aren't big enough for dependable reception. What you need is a dish from 30" or larger, with an appropriate mounting. For your setup, I'll suggest a 30" dish. Make sure the mount is included. Some dishes will also come with an LNB included - this is not a big deal, since you can buy an LNB for under $10. If you want to view on more than one TV, you'll need a "twin" or "quad" LNB, and additional cable and receiver for each TV.

Some choices for your dish:
Winegard DS2076 76 cm Dish Antenna, $44.97 + $19.30 shipping
30" FTA Satellite Dish 76cm with Ku Linear LNB, $42.95 + $12.00 shipping

You could also search eBay for a dish: http://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=fta%20satellite%20dish&clk_rvr_id=507935369359. I got my 36"x39" dish, with mount and LNB, for about $80 on eBay.

If your dish does not come with an LNB, you'll need that, too: Linear Ku Band LNB

Be sure to select an LNB that is for Ku band, "linear". Do not get one intended for Dish Network or DirecTV, as these are "circular" LNBs and will not work for FTA.

I also strongly recommend a Satellite Finder. There are many to choose from, but you'll need nothing more than the basic $8 analog model.

You'll also need coax cable. I recommend a good grade of RG6 Coax cable. You'll need enough to run from your dish to each receiver, plus a few extra feet for slack and drip loops. You will also need a short (3 to 6 foot) length of coax for between your LNB and signal meter when you are setting up. This can be any old coax, even the cheap RG59 from the dollar store.

Your next item is a receiver. There are a lot of choices out there, ranging in price from under $20 to over $200. Some are good, others are not. A lot depends on the firmware and support. Your first decision is whether you want or need an HD receiver. If you are planning to just set up Galaxy 19, you won't need HD. Most feeds on Galaxy 19 are SD. There is at least one caveat: TFC, The Filipino Channel, is SD, but the sound is AC3 - and therefore you will need an HD receiver. You can view the video with an SD receiver, but you will get no sound. If you are considering HD or multiple satellites, then spend the extra money for an HD receiver. Another feature of some receivers is the ability to record to a USB drive. Be aware, there are plenty of flaky designs and poorly made clones out there! Some great receivers have poor motor control as well.

So, if you need a basic, single satellite SD receiver, I can vouch for this one, for just over $20:

X2-fta Dvb-s Mini Digital Satellite Receiver
If this box meets your needs, then you can build a complete FTA system (dish, receiver, LNB, cables and signal meter) for under $100!

If you're needing an HD model, then this one should serve you well:

X2 Premium HD PVR FTA Satellite Receiver - Special Edition

It also has a PVR function and the price is around $55 - and it will do AC3 sound.

If you're looking for the best designed and best supported HD PVR receiver currently on the market, the GeoSatPro Micro HD comes highly recommended, at just over $100 on eBay:

This receiver will no doubt serve all your needs well into the future, even as you add a motor or multiple LNBs to your system.

Should you decide you want a motor drive, the Moteck Sg-2100 Satellite Dish Motor is recommended by many hobbyists.

UPDATE: AEREO SERVICE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE!

Aereo, a service that allows subscribers to view live as well as time-shifted streams of local over-the-air television on Internet-connected devices, has announced that it is coming to Utah.

“We’re excited to be launching our technology in Utah, or what is fast
becoming known as the Silicon Slopes,” said Aereo CEO and founder Chet
Kanojia. “Utahans are connected, tech-savvy and interested in
innovations that can add value to their lives. When it comes to how you
watch television, Aereo’s technology will bring more choice and
flexibility to Utahans across the state, whether you live in Salt Lake
City, St. George or Ogden. We believe consumers want and deserve a
better television experience and our work is focused on delivering the
best customer experience with the highest quality technology.”

In Utah, which is served by Comcast in some areas, consumers will be
able to record and watch networks such as KSTU-HD (FOX), KSL-DT (NBC),
KUTV-HD (CBS), KTVX-HD (ABC) and KUED-HD (PBS), as well as other
over-the-air special interest and foreign language channels, including
BYU-TV, AntennaTV, ION, Qubo, Estrella TV and others. In addition,
consumers will also be able to add Bloomberg Television.

Aereo said that anyone who is interested in trying the service can
pre-register on its website, which will give them priority over those
that don’t. Aereo’s service will be available to consumers across all 29
counties in Utah on Aug. 19.

Aereo heads to Beehive StateWhat's
interesting about this is that Utah has an extensive translator network
that delivers a majority of Salt Lake City's channels to most of the
state. Therefore, Aereo will available to pretty much the entire state,
rather than just a limited metro area as in other markets like New York
city. https://aereo.com/coverage/slc Aereo’s service will be available to consumers across all 29 counties in Utah on Aug. 19

I hope this really puts the screws to Comcast. Profit is one thing, greed is another.

Not only are they encrypting "Limited Basic" cable (the lowest price cable, consisting mostly of some of your local channels), they're killing QAM,
and the "Digital Transport Adapter" they provide is NOT HD, and you need a box for
every TV. Aren't they also charging rental for those boxes now, too? I
think they call it a "Digital outlet charge" or some sort of doublespeak. Yea,
the box is "free", but they still found a way to charge you every
month for it.

What DOES Comcast charge for "Limited Basic" cable in Utah now, anyway? Does anyone know? They are really good at hiding the price, I can't find it online anywhere. EDIT: I FOUND IT! It's about $30 a month, plus fees and taxes - lets call it $40.

AEREO is $8 a month, it's HD, and you don't "rent" a box. You can BUY a
Roku to watch it on, and watch on 5 devices - at no extra cost. It comes
with 20 hours of DVR. For an additional $4, you can record 2 shows at
once, and get 60 hours DVR.

Say what you will about Aereo, but
competition is GOOD for the consumer. If we had 3 different cable companies to choose from, you bet your a$$ Comcast wouldn't be charging as much as it does. I'm signed up for the preview, and I'm looking forward to giving you all a
review. I'll give them a test drive, but I'm sure I'll stick to watching
TV with my antenna - as God intended!

FTA Satellite TV
Part 2

(Read part 1 here)

FTA satellite TV is not for everyone. But is FTA Satellite TV for you? That depends on a number of things.

Consider that you'll need to install a satellite dish at least 30" in diameter to get FTA Ku band programming - that's about 2x the size of the smallest (18") Dish Network or DirecTV dishes. Satellite dishes are covered by the FCC's OTARD regulations, which allow for the installation of satellite dishes up to 1 meter diameter (or any size in Alaska), in an area that you have "exclusive use" of. Basically, you can put a FTA dish anywhere you can put an antenna or DirecTV / Dish Network dish.

If you aren't allowed to have a satellite dish where you live, you can stop right here. Otherwise, read on to see if FTA satellite TV is something you may be interested in.

What programming is available on a Ku band satellite dish? Sadly, most of the content on FTA is religious and foreign language programming. Satellite Galaxy 19, for example, carries over 200 unencrypted channels. Of those 200+ channels, I found 9 that I may watch at least occasionally when I fist scanned for channels. But, there are a few gems, and being able to get just one channel that you really like may make it worth your while. For example, my wife is speaks Tagalog, and one of the channels on Galaxy 19 is TFC, "The Filipino Channel". Now, I can get TFC from DirecTV or Comcast - but, I would have to pay for a basic package PLUS an additional $25 a month just for TFC and a few additional channels that would never get watched. In the end, it would cost about $70 a month just to be able to watch that one channel! My cost for a 36x39 dish, receiver, cable, signal meter, and mount came to under $150. So, my payback time is under 2 months. After that, TFC is free.

Take a look at what's available and decide if there's anything that interests you here: http://www.ftalist.com/index.php

So I now get TFC for free. TFC Canada West is currently unencrypted, but - as is the nature of FTA - at any time, the provider may decide to encrypt the signal, remove it, or move to C-band (which requires a large 6' plus dish!). At that point, your system may become totally useless to you if you can find nothing else that interests you on any satellite. Selling your system (on eBay, Craig's List, or one of the many Satellite TV forums) may allow you to recoup about 50% of your investment, however.

So if you speak a language other than English, FTA may be for you. If you are seeking religious programming, FTA TV could be your heaven on Earth. And if you are from the Middle East AND religious, praise be to Allah!

Another group of people who find FTA satellite TV invaluable are those in very remote locations who have no OTA (Over The Air - with a TV antenna) broadcast TV signals, and do not want to pay the cost of paid satellite TV. For these people, the many PBS channels and news feeds alone are invaluable. Even if you have a remote camp or cabin without cable, OTA TV, or even electric service, FTA setups have very low power requirements and can be powered with an inexpensive solar system, or even from your car battery.

So by now you've perused the list of available channels on FTA List, and decided whether or not it's worth your time and money. If you've decided to go for it, you have to realize that there are not many installers for FTA. In fact, you will probably have to do it yourself. This is why many people who have FTA are "hobbyists" and do-it-yourself -ers. It's not always easy to jump into FTA as a clueless newbie, but it can be done. I did it, and you can too. There's plenty of forums online that are willing to help a clueless newbie out. Browse Amazon for receivers and dishes and read the reviews, look at what's available on eBay, join a forum, and ask questions. I can highly recommend the Satellite Guys Forum.

Today, we are going to dabble a bit in the "black arts" of free TV. No, we aren't going to do anything illegal. It's all perfectly legal, the equipment is inexpensive, and the programming is FREE.

Let's get this out of the way first: it's not a replacement for pay TV. No HBO, ESPN, or Showtime here. No HGTV. But there is a lot of content that you would find in a basic pay TV package, and free over the air (OTA) broadcast TV can be found. You can also find some unencrypted premium content as well, albeit most of that is international (non-English) programming.

In this multi-part series of posts, we'll walk you through what free satellite TV is and what is not, what content is available, what it will cost you, and how to set up a simple single satellite system for about $100-$200.

Lets start at the beginning: the 1970's, the dawn of satellite TV.

FTA Satellite TV
Part I

In 1976, Home Box Office made history by initiating satellite
delivery to cable with the boxing match know
as “The Thriller From Manila”. Also in 1976, Stanford University Professor H. Taylor Howard created his own satellite receiver in his garage. It was fed by a very large
dish antenna, and used to receive content that providers offered to cable systems. Mr. Howard wrote a check for $100 to HBO to pay for movies he had
watched, HBOy returned his check, saying that it dealt only with
large cable companies. Thus began the DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite) industry.

In the early 1980's, these "C-band" home satellite systems were expensive and required large dish antennas in excess of 8 feet in diameter, and cost in the neighborhood of $20,000+. However, soon the price had dropped to a more "reasonable" $3000. Consumers were lured in by access to free, unencrypted premium programming for a one-time investment, and the DBS industry boomed. Over 2 million systems were installed by the late 1980's.

But the free lunch was about to come to a screeching halt. As is the American way, a group of pay TV providers lobbied (bribed) congress to do something. In response, congress passed the 1984 Cable Act, allowing broadcasters to encrypt their signals. Sales of "Big, Ugly Dishes" (BUDs) plummeted, as more and more content was encrypted. For a time, several companies sold decoders that allowed dish owners to subscribe to programming for a monthly fee, but eventually the last of them went under. All that remained for dish owners was a dwindling number of unencrypted channels and a big ugly dish cemented in the ground in their back yard.

In the interim, a new generation of more powerful satellites was launched that required smaller dishes of about 30" in diameter. Much of the programming on these "Ku band" satellites is not scrambled, and can be received for free. And while the BUD dishes are huge and can be prohibited by localities and HOAs, the FCC's OTARD regulations allow you to put a dish under 1 meter diameter anywhere you can put an antenna or pay TV satellite dish. Although C-band still has a lot of unencrypted content, the cheapest and easiest way to get in to FTA ("FreeTo Air") satellite is with a smaller Ku band dish.

In the next post, we'll look at what content is available on Ku band FTA, and see if a FTA system is for you, and after that we'll get down to actually buying the equipment and setting up a system.
If you haven't noticed, KUTO's .4 subchannel has dropped the TUFF TV network and replaced it with 24/7 infomercials. PSIP ID now identifies 15.4 as "KUTO-INFO". I believe that they didn't want to drop TUFF, but were forced into it because another LP station in SLC has aquired exclusive rights to TUFF TV in Utah. (Correct me if I am wrong, KUTO!) There is the chance that TUFF may be back on the air in Cache Valley in the future, or that some other network could show up on 15.4 (May I suggest The Cool TV, or Movies!)

I really do enjoy TUFF programming, but I also understand that someone has to pay the bills. And remember, back in the days before digital TV and subchannels, many LP stations existed solely to broadcast infomercials. At least KUTO is still broadcasting worthwhile network and local programming on their three other subchannels. As of the 14th of May, you can force this update by going to:

Settings

Software update

Check now

This new update gives older "2" series Roku players the same interface as the new Roku 3.
From the Official Roku Blog:

When we launched the Roku 3 in March, we also announced an entirely new Roku interface. The new experience has gotten rave reviews for its intuitive layout, quick reflexes, built-in search tool, redesigned Channel Store and home screen themes. We think you’ll love it.
We’ve begun rolling out the new interface to supported Roku players
as a free upgrade, and we know many of you have been waiting
<del>im</del>patiently! Today, we’re thrilled to announce that you can update manually right this minute by selecting Settings > Software update > Check now on your Roku player.

If you’re not the manual type, all you need to do is kick back and keep
your Roku player connected to the Internet. Over the next two weeks, the
automatic software update —version 5.0, build 804X— will roll out to the
following supported players in all regions: Roku 2 XS (model 3100), Roku 2 XD (model 3050), Roku 2 HD (model 3000), Roku LT (models 2400 & 2450), Roku HD (model 2500) and the Roku Streaming Stick (models 3400 & 3420). (Note: Roku Search is currently available only in the U.S.)
Unfortunately, new features and functionality sometimes require new
hardware, and earlier Roku models cannot support the update.

I like the new look. It fits more channels on one page, it's easier to organize and faster to navigate, and it's more attractive than the old single-line interface. I really like the themes and hope they add more - being an "astro-nut" myself, I am using the "Nebula" theme.

Now, the bad news:
You won't see this in the photos posted on Roku's website or ads, but the new interface has large ads for Roku content providers on the right side of the screen. The new interface gives only 3 columns of channels. 5 columns would easily fit on the page without these ads. Another minor annoyance is that I have been using the "My Channels" app, that allows me to sort channels into "categories", like Movies, TV, Apps, Games, etc, but the new Roku interface does not have categories. I thought the "My Channels" app would be pointless once we got the update, but it turns out that I will be keeping it.

Overall, my Roku XS seems a bit faster to navigate and load channels now, and is more attractive than the slow single line interface that we've been used to and complained about since the very first Roku. So yes, I prefer the new interface.
